Step 1: Temporary Residence Registration
Finish the temporary residence registration via WeChat and obtain the Temporary Residence Registration Form (临时住宿登记、临住、"linzhu")
Step 2: Take a Health Checkup
Make a health checkup appointment, take the health checkup and receive the Health Check Report on your cellphone (体检报告)
Step 3: Apply for the Residence Permit
Schedule a visa appointment at the visa office and apply for a Residence Permit using the Temporary Residence Registration Form, the Health Check Report, and other required documents.
STEP 1: TEMPORARY RESIDENCE REGISTRATION 临时住宿登记
According to relevant Chinese laws, international students MUST register within 24 hours of arriving in or changing their residence in China. You can finish this registration quite quickly via WeChat or the cell phone app 我的南京 (My Nanjing). See Registration Guides: Temporary Residence Registration Tutorial (WeChat).pdf or Temporary Residence Registration Tutorial (MyNanjing).pdf.
Documents required: valid passport, the entry stamp and the Chinese visa/residence permit page
Fees required: none
If you live in a hotel, hotel receptionists will finish this registration for you when checking in. Otherwise, you have to turn to the local police station (辖区派出所)to complete the registration on your own. You should bring your passport to local police station, finish the registration offline and receive the printout of the form there.
If you live on Xianlin Campus, you should go to Xianlin Police Station (仙林派出所, 文枢东路11号,025-83148274,工作时间9:00-12:00,14:00-17:30 / 11 Wenshudonglu, Tel.025-83148274, working hours 9:00-12:00, 14:00-17:30).
Once your registration is approved, please download and print the Temporary Residence Registration Form as it is necessary for your residence permit application later.
STEP 2: HEALTH CHECKUP 体检
New international students who will be studying at NUFE for more than three months are required to undergo a health check at the Jiangsu International Travel Healthcare Center. The Health Check Report is necessary for obtaining a Residence Permit, so it is important to complete the health check as soon as possible.
Documents required: WeChat appoitment, valid passport, two 2-inch photos (35mm * 49mm, blue-backgrounded)
Fees required: 580 CNY
Work time: Mon. to Fri. 8:30-11:30 12:30-16:30 (need an appointment)
Address: 39 Chuangzhi Rd., Jiangsu International Travel Healthcare Center/创智路39号江苏国际旅行卫生保健中心
Please refrain from eating any meals or drinking water until you have completed the health check!
Students who have completed health checks in their home countries within the last six months can bring the relevant reports to the Jiangsu International Travel Healthcare Center for verification. If the original health check reports do not meet the required standards, students will need to undergo a new health check. The expenses for the health check will be the responsibility of the students. Additionally, any student whose health check results do not meet the minimum health standards will be required to leave China within 30 days of arrival and bear all associated costs.
To schedule a health check appointment and receive the report, please use WeChat. Refer to the appointment guide available from WeChat or download Health Check Tutorial.pdf. Once you receive notification that your health check report is ready, please download and save the PDF file of the report on your cellphone.
STEP 3: RESIDENCE PERMIT APPLICATION 申请居留许可
The Residence Permit is a long-term stay visa for most international students in China, which has no border entry & exit limits. Most international students with X1 visas must convert them into Residence Permits in time because, by the relevant visa law, the X1 visa is only valid for 30 days after the visa holder enters China. Overstaying your visa will lead to severe punishments by the immigration authority. For instance, your entry seal was stamped on September 2, 2023, so the last day of your X1 Visa is October 2, 2023. Any student whose Residence Permit (or visa) expires in China will be fined or punished according to the visa law of China by the immigration authority. For the legal liabilities, please read the Exit and Entry Administration Law of the People's Republic of China.
Within 30 days of entering China, new international students must pass the health check, pay tuition and accommodation fees, and then take the documents issued by the College of International Education to the Immigration Department of the Nanjing Police Department to apply for Residence Permits. Enrolled students must come to the College of International Education at least 30 days before the Residence Permit expires and take the required documents to the Immigration Department of the Nanjing Police Department to extend the current residence permit.
