At the beginning of each autumn semester, NUFE will organize a Residence Permit Group Application for the new students in the Chinese Preparatory Program. We will collect the passports and other required documents from the students who would like to join the group and have a preview with the relevant immigration department. Later, we will negotiate with the department for a reservation, arrange a direct bus to take the group there, and finish the final procedures. If you want to join the group, please read the instructions carefully and prepare all the required documents before the preview. If you prefer individual applications, you can take this tutorial as a reference and prepare your application package accordingly.
1. Check Your Visa Status
Most new students have been issued the X1 Visas, which are valid only for 30 days after entering China. So you can check the date of your entry seal and calculate the last day of your visa easily. For instance, your entry seal was stamped on Sept.2, 2023, so the last day of your X1 Visa is Oct.2, 2023. Please remember to submit your Residence Permit Application to immigration authorities no later than the last day; otherwise overstaying your visa will lead to severe punishments by immigration authorities.
2. Understand Residence Permit
The Residence Permit is a long-time residence visa for most international students in China, which has no border entry & exit limits. International students with X1 visas must convert them into Residence Permits in time as the X1 visa is only valid for 30 days after the visa bearer enters China.
For the Chinese Preparatory Program students, generally the last day of their residence permits is to be set as Jun.30, 2024, which corresponds to their program schedule. Some students may be promoted to bachelor’s degree programs or the 2nd year language program next year, and they will extend their residence permits in late June next year.
The students who finish language study and leave NUFE must cancel their residence permits and apply for short-term stay visas, which usually are valid for two or three weeks.
3. Prepare Required Documents
Please prepare the following documents and items as soon as possible.
3.1 Residence Permit Application Form
This form will be distributed to you after class. You should fill in it with a black gel ink pen. Ballpoint pens are prohibited. You can take this sample form as a reference: RESIDENCE PERMIT APPLICATION FORM SAMPLE.pdf .
3.2 NUFE Certificate

3.4 Passport & Photocopy
The validity of your passport should be over Jun. 30, 2024. Make a photocopy of the personal information page of your passport.
3.5 Visa Page, Entry Seal & Photocopy
Make a photocopy of your X1 visa page and your entry seal. If the seal was stamped on a separate page, you should make another photocopy of the seal.
3.6 Temporary Accommodation Registration Form

3.7 Health Check Report & Photocopy
Please submit the colored page (the one with your photo) of your health check reports. Make a photocopy of this page.
3.8 Two 2-Inch Photos
The colored 2-inch photo has to be taken within the last 180 days. It should be half-length, bareheaded, and full-faced with a white background and dark colored clothes. If you apply for your Residence Permit in the visa office on 173 Baixia Road, you can take photos on the 1st floor for 40 CNY, but group application students have to prepare photos in advance as our group application is in another branch office.
Please use a paper clip to attach your photos to the application form, with the backside up to avoid any possible stains on the photo.
3.9 Application Fee
400 CNY for the Residence Permit within one year. You can pay the fee by WeChat Pay, Alipay, or UnionPay Bank Cards issued in China.
4. Preview & Appointment
刘老师 will collect the documents mentioned above and submit them to the visa office of the Jianye Branch of the Nanjing Immigration Police Department. Some students might have to re-submit or add a few documents based on the feedback of the visa office. 刘老师 will make an appointment with the office and later NUFE will arrange a direct bus to take you from Xianlin Campus to the office to finish the final procedures on the appointed day. When your application has been accepted, you will receive a Receipt. In approximately three weeks, you can bring the Receipt to the visa office and fetch your passport.
5. All Done
When you receive your passport, you can take pictures of your passport information page and the Residence Permit page on your cellphone as backups. Then check the expiration date on your Residence Permit page. If the expiration date is not Jun.30, 2024, please get in touch with 刘老师 immediately.
